Biological Oceanography Section
Phytoplankton and zooplankton play a crucial role in regulating the flux of many important elements from inorganic nutrients to organic particles as food for organisms at the higher trophic levels in the marine ecosystem, and the fluctuations in fishery resources are known to be closely related to the variation in plankton production. In order to understand the energy flow through the ecosystem, we study the nutrient cycles, primary production process by phytoplankton, zooplankton ecology and their food chain. Satellite ocean color observations are utilized for understanding marine biological processes.
